Day 7: Jail Breaking Your iTouch 2G

I recently bought myself a semi-new iTouch from Tipid PC and the first thing I asked my dear friend for is to jail break it, so it could use applications other than that of Apple store.

So, enought talk. First thing’s first, you need the following items for you to successfully jail break your iTouch 2G.

1. OS 3.0 firmware - Downloadable from any torrent and file storage provider or if you have money, you may buy one from apple store. I downloaded mine at Piratebay.org. I’m not sure if it’s still active or there are still seeders for the firmware, anyway you may download it here. It’s safe no virus, trojan, or whatsoever maliscious appz embedded to it, but for the record, let me just say this - Download at your own risk. I am not responsible for any damage it may incur to your hardware. And if ever you decided to use the link I gave you. A torrent software is needed for it to be read. There are lots of torrent software out there - BitTorrent is one, just google it and problem solved. This is awfully a huge file so be patient.

2. A Jail Breaking Software - In this case, there’s one that I know of that could do the job. I used RedSnow. For the latest version and information, you may read them here.

3. iTunes - You may get the latest version from Apple downloads for FREE. The latest version at the moment, July 12, 2009, is 8.2.0.23. You have to install this one of course for you to use it.

After you gathered the required items listed above, you may now proceed to the actual jail breaking process. It’s not that difficult like I thought it was before. Dont be afraid to make mistakes.

Okay, here are the instructions for the jail breaking process:

1. If RedSnow comes in a compressed format, extract it to a folder. You may name the folder using any name you want, but for reference purposes, let’s name the folder “JailBreakMe”.

2. Connect your iPod Touch 1G/2G to your PC

3. In iTunes 8.2 select your iPod under DEVICES in left menu

4. Under the Summary tab, Hold Shift and click Restore

5. Browse to OS 3.0 firmware file of iPod Touch located at JailBreakMe folder or if you didn’t use the naming convention mentioned in step 1, from your download folder

6. iTunes will extract the software and apply it, it may take a while so be patient

7. You now have upgraded your iTouch 2G to OS 3.0 firmware

8. Time to jailbreak the OS 3.0, Run the Redsn0w.exe

9. Browse to the same OS 3.0 firmware at JailBreakMe folder or if you didn’t use the naming convention mentioned in step 1, from your download folder

10. Follow the steps provided, then click the NEXT button until prompted “Done!”

After that, RedSnow will notify you that the process is done, your iTouch will restart/reboot. You will see a running pineapple, wait for it to finish and successfuly load your iTouch’s desktop. Once there, you done!

To check the current firmware version of your iTouch, go to Settings>General>About.
